WATN

Have you ever found yourself wondering where a classmate or a friend landed after high school? We do too - so we decided to ask some questions.

A recent survey has provided us insight into that question, and we are pleased to celebrate the graduates of Gothenburg High School. The response has been fantastic and we are thrilled to release the first installment of "Where Are They Now?":

Craig Furrow is a member of the class of 2000. Furrow is the Industrial Operations Lead at Casella Resource Solutions in Broken Bow.

“We handle all trash and recycling for BD Broken Bow,” he said. “OUr goal is to keep the company’s scrap from going to the landfill.”

Furrow did not go to college after his graduation from GHS, and says that the standard of work ethic is one thing he learned in high school that he has taken with him in his life and help lead him to the success he has found.

He offered the following to current students at GHS: “Don’t worry so much about what others think,” he said. “Find your path and do what makes you happy.”

Furrow enjoys hunting, fishing and local theater outings in his free time, which he spends with his wife, Heidi.

A 2019 graduate of GHS, Annie Bassett went to college at Nebraska College of Technological Agriculture in Curtis, studying Equine Industry Management and Ag Business.

Currently, she is an assistant manager at Goodlife Gothenburg but is in the process of starting her own business that is in the wheelhouse of the degrees she earned.

“My training/lesson business with my two horses will launch this summer,” she said. “I will be finishing and showing my horses while also teaching kids and adults how to ride and properly take care of horses.”

Bassett says the one thing she took from GHS is that it’s never too late to start something new or find your true passion or calling.

“Try something new in college such as a class or a club,” she offered to current students. “It might be something you find a passion for or meet some long time friends you never knew you needed.”

In her free time, Annie enjoys riding horses, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

She lives in Gothenburg and credits her boyfriend, 2015 GHS grad Konnor Barnes with her return to her roots.

“He’s the reason I moved back a little over a year ago,” she said. “When I was a senior we met through work and it didn’t work out for us then, but we found each other three years later. It’s a reminder that everything comes full circle and things happen for the better when you least expect it.”

Retired FBI Agent Darin Werkmeister is a 1985 graduate of GHS. Since his retirement, he has taken to the written word and is, in his words, an aspiring writer.

What he took from GHS that has taken him through his life so far is remembering to enjoy the good times and leaning on his friends during the rough ones.

Werkmeister asked current GHS students to enjoy their time at one of the best public schools and small towns in the world.

“Never forget where you’re from,” he said.

In his free time, Werkmeister says he enjoys hiking, cooking and spending time outside.

His supernatural thriller, “Volk” is available for pre-order on Amazon, and will available for purchase on January 29.
